Men dominate the lists of the world's richest people. However, there are dozens of women whose net worth can tower into the billions. Some of these women are heiresses to million and even billion-dollar empires, some are self-made entrepreneurs and businesswomen, and some have used inherited fortunes to build empires of their own. Despite challenges, these women have risen above adversity in their fields to become magnates of the business world.

Yang Huiyan is a Chinese property developer and chief shareholder of Country Garden Holdings. This property development company has an estimated annual revenue of $33.8 billion, and Huiyan's share was mainly inherited from her father. She is 37 years old and has an estimated net worth of $25 billion. She is also a chairholder in Bright Scholar Education Holdings along with her aunt, who also appeared on the 2017 Forbes China Rich List. She holds a B.A. from the University of Ohio.

Bettencourt Meyers is an heiress to the makeup company L'Oreal's fortune, inherited by her mother Liliane Bettencourt. She has an estimated net worth of $49.3 billion and owns, along with her family, 33% of L'Oreal's stock. Her and her family have pledged to donate $226 million dollars to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral after the April 2019 fire. She devotes most of her efforts to philanthropy with her family's foundation, the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation.

The former wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Mackenzie Bezos, will become one of the richest women in the world upon the finalization of her divorce. Her net worth will sit somewhere around $35.6 billion, and she will hold a good portion of Amazon's stock, although her husband will have voting control over what she retains. She holds an English degree from Princeton University and has written two novels, "The Testing of Luther Albright" and "Traps." She had to give up 75% of her Amazon shares in her divorce yet still remains one of the richest women in America.

Despite her inherited wealth from the Walmart Incorporation, she devotes the majority of her time to other interests, including raising horses and collecting famous artworks. She also founded and opened the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in her home state of Arkansas.
