I want you to give yourself a moment to look back through time. Start in the 80s with Pong and Pac-Man, then to the early 90s when 3D wasn't quite yet 3D. Got it? Cool. Now, advance further to the N64 and original PlayStation, and remember how cool you thought the graphics were. These days, they're even cooler, and on the verge of the PS5's release, its time to look at the best PS4 games ever. Since Red Dead Redemption 2 isn't yet out, we at least have one spot free for another awesome game.
The last few video gaming years have been dominated by team-based hero shooters. One of the best and most played of these is Overwatch, the precursor to the fad. Overwatch was released in the spring of 2016 with an already overwhelming amount of buzz surrounding it. No other game had experienced the pre-launch attention that Overwatch did, attracting gamers who wouldn't even call themselves fans of FPS. Overwatch also got universal acclaim on its official release and just keeps getting better and better. Who even knows what's next for this fun-as-balls outing?
The Dark Souls franchise dates back to 2011, smashing records with its first installment. Gaming titans across the globe consider it to be one of the best video games ever, despite it being slightly difficult to master. Dark Souls III is a fitting conclusion to the series, also becoming the fastest-selling game in Bandai Namco's history. Dark Souls III is a fantastic, thrilling third-person action role-playing game all gamers need to play.
Fallout 4 is a game that's set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland full of danger and possibility. Have you ever asked yourself what would happen if you were the sole survivor of a global war? Fallout 4 places you firmly in those shoes as you reemerge into the world 210 years after being placed in a cryogenic vault. Fallout manages to explore this world in a realistic fashion, where there are as many friends as there are enemies. Fallout 4 explores starting over in an immersive open-world allowing thousands of hours of worthy game-play. We'd go so far as to say it's even one of the best games of the century.
Horizon Zero Dawn is a PS4 exclusive, meaning you can't play this game on any other console. Not even a PC. It's like Red Dead Redemption all over again except even better because of its exclusivity. The game is post-apocalyptic but in an entirely different way to Fallout 4. In this world, what humans are left are now joining clans the way we did back in the days when Clive Owen was King Arthur. Oh, and there are also mechanical dinosaur monster creatures that look incredibly unique for the genre. In addition to all of this, the game looks incredible on a console and will impress just about anyone.
The God of War franchise is jam-packed with games that bring the myths and legends of ancient civilizations to life. It's a mythology-based adventure game that will probably also delight fans of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. The fifth installment, God of War, was released on the PS4 and marked the beginning of a brand new era for gamers. In place of the Greek mythology of yore, Kratos now finds himself in the land of the Norse. He also has a son who gives a little bit of humanity to the otherwise brutal Spartan. It's awesome.
Fans of the Grand Theft Auto games were excited when Rockstar announced that GTA V would be in San Andreas. San Andreas is based on Southern California and was first seen in the PlayStation 2's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. It was a vast open-world landscape the likes of which hadn't been seen back then. Due to advances in technology, those revisiting the world would be astounded at the realism of somewhere they already felt close to. In addition to that, players can now control one of three characters. And yes, the sex workers are still around.
You can't have been anywhere online recently without seeing Fortnite mentioned somewhere. You must have been hiding in a bush. Basically, Fortnite is the best thing since sliced bread. In fact, it's a huge deal for those who play it. While, in essence, it's a battle royale game—think Hunger Games or, well, Battle Royale—it's gained more traction for its cooperative modes. Like in Minecraft, you can get to foraging and building your own world. You know, and basically doing anything to not be killed by monsters. Together!!!
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a phenomenal game in and of itself. However, the game is made infinitely better with the use of virtual reality. Could you ever have imagined using VR as a legitimate way to play video games? Us either, but it's finally happened, and it's good if not better than we ever could have imagined. Skyrim is also a great game to use it with as the VR helps reimagine the epic in a whole new way. Now, are you going to be a VR elf or human?
Capcom's action role-player came out on PS4 in January of 2018, and its 94% approval rating shows how good it is. The Monster Hunter started on the PS2 in 2004, but the newest installment is by far the best yet. As the protagonist, you're dropped into a mass of land that's filled with monsters. You can then decide to slay it or capture it, depending on how kind you feel that particular day. Kinda sums up gaming as a whole, doesn't it?
No PlayStation list would be complete without a Tomb Raider installment. Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to 2013's Tomb Raider. These Tomb Raider games focus on a young Lara and on how she became our favorite pointy-boobed archeologist in the first place. Because the original Tomb Raider reboot was such a hit, Rise of the Tomb Raider was hotly anticipated. It's also a good thing both of the games exist, and not just because it's an incredible game full of challenging puzzles and stunning graphics. It's also a chance to forget that the newest Tomb Raider movie ever happened. Long live Lara Croft.
