Halloween is always a lot of fun, but it gets even better when the entire family participates. Dressing everyone up in cohesive costumes is a great way to bond and you’ll love the reactions you get when people figure out your theme. But choosing a costume for yourself can already be difficult, so how can you possibly choose for your whole family? Thankfully, there are plenty of options!

If you have a particularly large family, Pokémon is the route to go. After all, with 894 species across all of the games, you’ll definitely have enough costumes to choose from. You could dress as Ash and Misty and their partners from the original show if you love a bit of nostalgia. Alternatively, swap it up and embrace your villainous side with the iconic Jessie, James, and Meowth.

Grab your wands, because Halloween is the perfect time to pay homage to your favorite Hogwarts cohort. There’s the classic Lily and James with their infant son, Harry. Alternatively, dress up as members of each Hogwarts house. You can even play around by bringing in some of the crew's fantastic beasts, such as werewolves, pixies, grindylows, and doxies.

There are few things children love as much as animals. Throw on some plaid shirts and overalls, toss your kid in a piggy costume, and hit the streets as a full-on farm family. Not only does this allow for some creativity for the adults, but it also lets kids dress as their favorite animal. After all, almost any animal can call a farm their home. Nothing is cuter than a toddler in a llama suit.

Most franchises haven’t survived over the years, but Mario and his friends have been a mainstay in gaming culture for almost 4 decades. He might be the only character that is as relevant now as the day his game was released. Plus, the costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you want. After all, Mario and Luigi basically only require a hat and overalls. The princesses — Peach and Rosalina — just need a dress and a crown. Don’t forget about all the adorable creatures that would make perfect costumes: goombas, koopas, and boos.

The best costume ideas have plenty of room for innovation. Dressing your family as different foods allows you to show off your creativity, have loads of fun, and still mesh as a group. A classic choice: outfit the adults as peanut butter and jelly and the kids as bread. You could also go as ketchup, mustard, and hot dogs, or a bowl of fruit. Have fun with it!
