Halloween is always a lot of fun, but it gets even better when the entire family participates. Dressing everyone up in cohesive costumes is a great way to bond and you’ll love the reactions you get when people figure out your theme. But choosing a costume for yourself can already be difficult, so how can you possibly choose for your whole family? Thankfully, there are plenty of options!

Catch ‘em all with Pokémon

If you have a particularly large family, Pokémon is the route to go. After all, with 894 species across all of the games, you’ll definitely have enough costumes to choose from. You could dress as Ash and Misty and their partners from the original show if you love a bit of nostalgia. Alternatively, swap it up and embrace your villainous side with the iconic Jessie, James, and Meowth.

Build the ultimate team

Kids love superheroes, so assemble the whole family as the ultimate team of heroes. From the Justice League and the Avengers to the Doom Patrol and the Thunderbolts, there are dozens of superhero teams to  draw inspiration from — or feel free to mix and match! After all, it wouldn’t be the first time Spider-Man stepped in to help the Fantastic Four. You can even cross universes; who hasn’t wanted to see Batman hang out with the Avengers?

Grab your wands, because Halloween is the perfect time to pay homage to your favorite Hogwarts cohort. There’s the classic Lily and James with their infant son, Harry. Alternatively, dress up as members of each Hogwarts house. You can even play around by bringing in some of the crew's fantastic beasts, such as werewolves, pixies, grindylows, and doxies.

Visit the farm

There are few things children love as much as animals. Throw on some plaid shirts and overalls, toss your kid in a piggy costume, and hit the streets as a full-on farm family. Not only does this allow for some creativity for the adults, but it also lets kids dress as their favorite animal. After all, almost any animal can call a farm their home. Nothing is cuter than a toddler in a llama suit.

Join Mario and his friends

Most franchises haven’t survived over the years, but Mario and his friends have been a mainstay in gaming culture for almost 4 decades. He might be the only character that is as relevant now as the day his game was released. Plus, the costumes can be as simple or elaborate as you want. After all, Mario and Luigi basically only require a hat and overalls. The princesses — Peach and Rosalina — just need a dress and a crown. Don’t forget about all the adorable creatures that would make perfect costumes: goombas, koopas, and boos.

Swap generations

Children get a kick out of dressing like their parents. Take it to the next level and swap generations entirely! Adults can dress in onesies and bibs while the kids throw on business attire and jewelry. It’s a lot of fun for onlookers and everyone will love the photos of your little ones picking up candy dressed as Dad or Grandma.

Be the food

The best costume ideas have plenty of room for innovation. Dressing your family as different foods allows you to show off your creativity, have loads of fun, and still mesh as a group. A classic choice: outfit the adults as peanut butter and jelly and the kids as bread. You could also go as ketchup, mustard, and hot dogs, or a bowl of fruit. Have fun with it!

Tap into the Disney magic

Chances are someone in your family is going to want to dress up like a Disney character for Halloween. After all, they are some of the most beloved in the world. Moana and Maui have been big favorites in recent years. Of course, Frozen's Elsa and Anna are also incredibly popular. Children will love dressing up as Pua and Olaf, too.

Build some memories with Fortnite

For the past several years, Fortnite has been a constant presence in the mainstream gaming community. Whether it’s the game itself or the many dances it popularized, you’ve no doubt experienced Fortnite in some way. With all of the in-game cosmetics, there are plenty of costumes to choose from. Dress up as a massive pink teddy bear, an angry shark, a punk rocker, or any other of the game’s many innovative skins, and pop your kiddos in mini versions or other aspects of the game, such as the Loot Llama pinata or the Rainbow Smash unicorn hammer.

Not only do Studio Ghibli films push the boundary of anime, but they are also films that the whole family can love. Each movie features characters primed for Halloween costume reproduction, too. Totoro, Satsuki, and Mei from “My Neighbor Totoro” make for incredibly cute family costumes. If you plan on making your outfits, No-Face and Kiki are easy to pull off and super adorable.
