Begin by grabbing a large bowl and combining the ground beef, breadcrumbs, ketchup, ground mustard, Worcestershire sauce, the smashed beef bouillon cube, and salt and pepper. Using your hands, knead the mixture until it is completely combined, then form it into six steak-shaped patties. You can be as detailed as you want with the patties - it's fun to try and make them appear as steak-like as possible!

In a large skillet or fry pan, heat the oil and butter on medium-high heat until the butter is melted. Add the patties one or two at a time and cook until there is no pink remaining - since they aren't real steaks you'll want them to be brown all the way through. Remove them from the pan and set on paper towels to make sure the excess grease is absorbed.

You Gotta Have Mashed Potatoes

The best side dish to go with Salisbury steak is mashed potatoes. They are simple and filling. Don't go for too much flavor in your potatoes when you're pairing them for a dish like Salisbury steak. All you need to make mashed potatoes is some Yukon gold potatoes, butter, milk, salt, and pepper.

To make the mashed potatoes, you'll want to chop the potatoes into chunks. Bring a pot of water to a boil, then add the potatoes and boil for 15 minutes. Drain the water, add the butter and milk then mix it all with a potato masher, a fork, or a blender until smooth and creamy. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Make the Gravy

To make the gravy, you'll want to start by reducing the heat in the skillet used for the steaks. Add the sliced onion to the grease and cook until golden brown. Add in the beef stock, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and the Italian seasoning. While it cooks, make a slurry with the corn starch and water, mixing until smooth. Add to the gravy mixture in the skillet and whisk until thickened — season with salt and pepper.

When your Salisbury steak, gravy, and mashed potatoes are ready you'll want to get them all on the plate. The steak can be served on top of the potatoes or to the side, but both steak and potatoes should be covered in gravy. Make sure you leave room for a good vegetable side to round out the meal!

Before you serve your Salisbury steak, you'll want to add a vegetable to the dish. Salisbury steak is a rich and flavorful dish so you'll want to pair it with some strong vegetables such as steam spinach, asparagus, steamed artichoke or even a nice cool coleslaw if you're enjoying the meal on a summer day. Any of these flavors will pair well with the main course.

How do I prepare my Salisbury steak for freezing?

Once your Salisbury steak, the mashed potatoes, and the gravy are finished, you can put them all together in a container and stick it in the freezer. Make sure to use both a freezer-safe and microwave-safe container. It will keep for a couple of weeks. When you are ready to reheat it, just pop it in the microwave and cook on HIGH for about 5 minutes. Halfway through you'll want to stop and flip the steak for even heating. Make sure that your steak is hot all the way through before eating!
